Carrier red flags guide

A practical guide for screening a carrier before a load is tendered.

Double brokering

A load may be accepted by one party and handed to another without the broker’s knowledge. Compare the operating entity on the rate con, the carrier at pickup and the authority you checked. When those names diverge, pause and confirm the chain directly.

Carrier identity misuse

A caller can use a real carrier’s MC number while controlling a different email or phone. Call the number in the public FMCSA record or an established contact you already know. Verify any change of dispatcher, domain or bank details through a separate channel.

Chameleon patterns

A new registration can share people, addresses or equipment with an older operation. That needs careful comparison across records and cannot be inferred from age alone. This version does not run cross-carrier matching.

Insurance certificates

A certificate image can be altered or stale. Ask the issuing agent or insurer to confirm coverage, effective dates, exclusions and the insured entity. Cargo coverage is often a contract requirement for general freight, even when it is not a general federal filing requirement.

Payment redirection

A sudden request for a new payee or account should be treated as a separate verification event. Contact a previously verified person using a known number before changing payment instructions.

At pickup

Confirm the driver’s name, truck identifiers and pickup appointment with the shipper and the carrier contact you independently verified. Record who confirmed what and when.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new MC number mean a bad carrier? No. It means less history may be available. What if the report has no flags? Continue normal verification; public records cannot establish the identity of the person offering the truck.
